Controversy remains regarding whether there is an association between circulating lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2), cytokines, and oxidative stress in healthy postmenopausal women. We investigated the influence of age on Lp-PLA2 activity in postmenopausal women not using hormone therapy and the relationship of Lp-PLA2 enzyme activity to serum cytokine levels and oxidative stress indices.

Apolipoprotein B: novel indicator of elevated intraocular pressure
Many studies have reported associations between elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and systemic health parameters, which suggest a common mechanism links IOP elevation and various related cardiometabolic risk factors. Furthermore, according to a recent study, serum apolipoprotein B (APO B) level is a predictor of coronary artery disease. Although metabolic acid load has been associated with many well-known risk factors for mortality, its clinical implications are not yet clear. To evaluate the association between biomarkers of metabolic acid load, such as serum bicarbonate, serum anion gap and urine pH and mortality, we analyzed the health records of 31 590 adults who underwent a health screening between January 2001 and December 2010 and had an estimated glomerular filtration rate ⩾60 ml min−1 per 1.73 m2.

Visit-to-visit systolic blood pressure variability (VTV-SBPV) is correlated with cardiovascular complications. However, it still remains unclear whether VTV-SBPV is related to cardiovascular outcomes in patients with peritoneal dialysis (PD), who often manifest hypertension. We, therefore, evaluated the association of VTV-SBPV with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular complications, or the loss of residual renal function (RRF) that is a powerful predictor of mortality and morbidity in PD patients.

Previous studies have indicated that supplementation with probiotics might improve lipid metabolism. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation with probiotic strains Lactobacillus curvatus (L. curvatus) HY7601 and Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) KY1032 on triglyceride (TG) and apolipoprotein A-V (apo A-V) levels.
