Changes in the Adipose Tissue Expression of CD86 Costimulatory Ligand and CD163 Scavenger Receptor in Obesity and Type-2 Diabetes: Implication for Metabolic Disease

The CD86 costimulatory ligand and CD163 scavenger receptor are expressed on monocytes/macrophages. However, modulations in the expression of these immune regulatory receptors in metabolic disease remain unclear. We, therefore, compared the adipose tissue expression of CD86/CD163 and signature inflammatorycytokines/chemokines in non-diabetic and diabetic individuals.

Long-term vegetarians have low oxidative stress, body fat, and cholesterol levels

Excessive oxidative stress and abnormal blood lipids may cause chronic diseases. This risk can be reduced by consuming an antioxidant- and fiber-rich vegetarian diet. We compared biomarkers of oxidative stress, antioxidant capacity, and lipid profiles of sex- and age-matched long-term vegetarians and omnivores in Korea.

Relationship of IL-5 with Th1 and Th2 Cytokines in Individuals with or without Type-2 Diabetes

Changes in plasma levels of T-cell cytokines may result in inflammatory disorders, including metabolic disease. The changes in circulatory IL-5 levels in obesity and type-2 diabetes (T2D) and their relationship with major Th1 and Th2 cytokines are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to determine obesity/T2D-associated perturbation in plasma IL-5 levels and investigate its association with Th1/Th2 cytokine levels in the circulation.

Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Epicardial Adipose Tissue Measured by Chest Computed Tomography in Healthy Adults

Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) may produce several cytokines contributed to coronary atherosclerosis. EAT was measured by transthoracic echocardiography or 3 dimensional cardiac computed tomography (CT) on previous studies. We aimed to evaluate the correlation between EAT thickness and cardiovascular risk factors in healthy adults.

Smoking Habits and Neuropeptides: Adiponectin, Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor, and Leptin Levels

This study aimed to identify changes in the level of neuropeptides among current smokers, former smokers, and individuals who had never smoked, and how smoking habits affect obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS).

Increased adipose tissue expression of IL-18R and its ligand IL-18 associates with inflammation and insulin resistance in obesity

The proinflammatory cytokine IL-18 is involved in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome. While the changes in IL-18 are known, IL-18R expression and relationship with IL-18 and other inflammatory markers in the adipose tissue in obesity/type-2 diabetes (T2D) remain unclear.

Antioxidant enzyme activities and DNA damage in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus after 12weeks of exercise

The objectives of this study are to assess the effects of a low-intensity exercise training which is not risky for children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) on the antioxidant enzyme activities and oxidative stresses compared with healthy controls.
